  8. death 1574. During the religious wars of
  9. 1562-69, she first supported the Protestant
  10. Huguenots against the Roman Catholic Guises
  11. to ensure her own position as ruler, she
  12. later opposed them, and has been
  13. traditionally implicated in the Massacre of
  14. St Bartholomew 1572.
